Your front door is the first line of defence against a burglar attack, but often homeowner’s front door locks do little to protect them. As locksmiths we’ve seen far too many times how vulnerable locks are to intruders but fear not, we can help you identify if your lock is weak and how to fix it.
1. Lock Snapping
The problem:
Lock snapping is common technique burglars often use, it requires little skills and makeshift tools. A burglar can snap the lock in as little as 13 seconds without causing much sound making it a huge issue to all who don’t have secure locks. Standard euro cylinders that are common on uPVC doors are particularly vulnerable.
The fix:
Upgrade your locks to an Anti Snap Cylinder that conforms to the latest British Standard Kitemark TS007 or an Ultion Anti Snap Lock as these are the most secure anti-snap locks on the market. ASK Locksmiths can supply and fit these high-security locks quickly and easily to ensure your locks are resistant to snapping, bumping and drilling.
2. Outdated Mortice Locks
The problem:
Old mortice locks that are only 3-lever compared to the more secure 5-lever locks are much easier to pick and force open. Burglars can easily identify these older models from the shape and keyhole which means they know they have an easy target.
The fix:
Upgrade your 3-lever locks with a 5-lever British Standard mortice lock. This will allow you to meet your home insurance requirements and provide significantly stronger resistance to a burglar attack.
3. Poorly Fitted Locks
The problem:
Even if you have a high security lock if it is not fitted correctly your home is more susceptible to break-ins. Loose screws, misaligned cylinders and strike plates and weak screws make your lock much easier for burglars to spot and target.
The fix:
Ensure your locks are professionally fitted by a trained locksmith. All our locksmiths at ASK Locksmiths are fully trained, DBS checked and use high standard parts to provide you with peace of mind knowing your home is safe and secure. Give one of our friendly team members a call if you need us.
